One of the most typical questions I hear when talking to people about body understanding and acceptance is, “Where do I even start?”

And I get it. I know what it’s like to know that what I’m doing isn’t working, but I don’t have the next step in my sights yet.

For much of my life, all I knew was restriction, hunger, and a paralyzing fear of gaining weight. I was certain that if I stayed small, everything else would be ok.

Feeling hungry and empty felt NORMAL, for goodness sake! I worked so hard to count calories, points, carbs, and everything else to ensure that my body’s size didn’t change.

I understand now that our bodies aren’t made to work that way and that the culture we live in encourages us to fight tooth and nail against our bodies’ natural cycles by requiring us to “control” our weight.

That understanding didn’t happen overnight, though, so I know what it’s like to be at my wit’s end, worried and afraid of what was coming next. That moment occurred the moment I quit lying.

All it took was one question with a raised eyebrow from a loving boyfriend: “Did you eat enough today?”

My first answer was a big fat lie: “Of course I did.”

Then I felt the light of Truth shining down with a love and warmth and brightness I could no longer ignore, and it all came pouring out. “No.” No I hadn’t eaten today or for many weeks prior.

I knew things were about to change. And that scared the hell out of me.

But here’s the thing: I was OK. With support, patience, and compassion, from others and myself, I began to accept myself in a new way. A way that feels authentic and rooted in Truth. My yoga practice, along with my love of biology and science have also been major influences on my process

And though it’s no longer a struggle, yes it’s a daily practice.
